Forward the tradition
- Deadline: 18 November 2019

The history of photography is the history of the continuous invention and renewal of the expressive repertoire of creative photographic communication. A number of genres rely on staging and directing, while straight photography and street photography seeks to create photographic meaning without prearranging the world in front of the camera. Some genres, such as portraiture and still life may incorporate both major approaches. We often identify the genre of the image just by looking at it, because we recognise the identifying features of the genre. For this exhibition we ask photographers to reflect on genres with photographic means. We are looking for photographs whose genre category is apparent by looking at the image, because of the creative use of the visual traditions of the genre. Experimental works that renew and challenge our understanding of photographic genres are also welcome.
PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for a group exhibition themed 'Forward the tradition'. We are looking for submissions from all photographers who are interested in photographic genre traditions and would like to share their work with a wider international audience through the exposure of PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed; we welcome submissions from all photographic genres and styles, including abstract compositions. We are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of photographic genres.
One juror’s choice and up to three honourable mentions will be selected and announced. The juror’s choice receives three free entries for any upcoming themed group exhibition calls at PH21 Gallery. (Each free entry includes up to 15 images.)
All photographers 18 years or older worldwide may enter the competition by submitting their own, original work.
Copyrights & Usage Rights:
By entering, entrants automatically accept the conditions of the competition; they grant PH21 Gallery nonexclusive right to use and reproduce submitted photographs (with the name of the photographer and the title of the work indicated) for promotional (e.g.: website and Facebook page of the Gallery, catalogue) and exhibition purposes. No royalties or compensation will be paid for these purposes. All copyrights and ownership of the works are retained by the photographer.
